Why does my child lose everything?

Keeping belongings requires noticing an item, giving it a home, remembering during transitions, and checking before leaving. The system may be the breakdown.

Why this task is more layered than it looks

A visible outcome is built from several smaller demands. These are useful places to look—not a list of diagnoses:

  • Organization
  • Working memory
  • Visual attention
  • Transitions

What to notice first

Choose a calm, familiar version of the task. Change as little as possible and notice:

  • Which items are lost?
  • Is there a visible home?
  • Can a final check replace reminders?
One useful place to begin

Give one frequently lost item one obvious home and attach a visual check to the risky transition.

Grade the task from the child’s response

Make it easier: Reduce belongings and make storage visible.

Build from success: Let the child design and use the final check.

The goal is not to force completion. It is to find the level where the child can participate, learn, and begin using a strategy that supports greater independence.
