Does my child need more hand strength—or is something else happening?

A task that looks weak may be limited by posture, coordination, planning, sensation, endurance, attention, or setup. Strength is only one component.

Why this task is more layered than it looks

A visible outcome is built from several smaller demands. These are useful places to look—not a list of diagnoses:

  • Grip strength
  • Postural support
  • Coordination
  • Endurance

What to notice first

Choose a calm, familiar version of the task. Change as little as possible and notice:

  • Is difficulty across many tasks?
  • Does position change performance?
  • Is force poorly graded?
One useful place to begin

Compare the same action with forearms supported and unsupported.

Grade the task from the child’s response

Make it easier: Stabilize the body and use larger materials.

Build from success: Reduce support or increase resistance one step.

The goal is not to force completion. It is to find the level where the child can participate, learn, and begin using a strategy that supports greater independence.
