Why are my child’s letters too large or poorly spaced?
Size and spacing require visual attention, boundary awareness, motor control, language knowledge, and self-monitoring. Knowing letters is only one component.
Why this task is more layered than it looks
A visible outcome is built from several smaller demands. These are useful places to look—not a list of diagnoses:
- Visual-spatial awareness
- Pencil control
- Boundary awareness
- Self-monitoring
What to notice first
Choose a calm, familiar version of the task. Change as little as possible and notice:
- Are errors consistent?
- Does highlighted space help?
- Can the child judge another sample?
Use one short phrase with a highlighted baseline and one concrete spacing tool.
Grade the task from the child’s response
Make it easier: Increase space and emphasize one boundary.
Build from success: Reduce visual supports one at a time.
The goal is not to force completion. It is to find the level where the child can participate, learn, and begin using a strategy that supports greater independence.
