Pre-Writing & Handwriting · School age
Why is my child’s handwriting so slow?
Slow writing may reflect letter recall, motor planning, pencil control, visual copying, language formulation, perfectionism, pain, or fatigue.
Why this task is more layered than it looks
A visible outcome is built from several smaller demands. These are useful places to look—not a list of diagnoses:
- Letter automaticity
- Motor efficiency
- Visual copying
- Planning and language
What to notice first
Choose a calm, familiar version of the task. Change as little as possible and notice:
- Is copying faster than generating?
- Are pauses between or within letters?
- Does shorter work help?
Compare one minute of copying familiar words with one minute of creating a sentence and note pauses.
Grade the task from the child’s response
Make it easier: Reduce copying and volume while preserving the learning goal.
Build from success: Build short fluent bursts before extending duration.
The goal is not to force completion. It is to find the level where the child can participate, learn, and begin using a strategy that supports greater independence.
