Pre-Writing & Handwriting · Toddler through early school age

Why does my child hold a pencil with their whole fist?

Young children often begin with whole-arm grasps before developing wrist and finger control. Age, experience, posture, tool size, and precision all influence grasp.

Why this task is more layered than it looks

A visible outcome is built from several smaller demands. These are useful places to look—not a list of diagnoses:

  • Grasp progression
  • Shoulder stability
  • Finger control
  • Tool demands

What to notice first

Choose a calm, familiar version of the task. Change as little as possible and notice:

  • Can the child make controlled marks?
  • Does a shorter tool change grasp?
  • Are precise play tasks difficult?
One useful place to begin

Offer a short crayon for a large vertical drawing to invite fingertip use without repeated correction.

Grade the task from the child’s response

Make it easier: Use large targets and brief playful marking.

Build from success: Move gradually toward smaller paths and tabletop work.

The goal is not to force completion. It is to find the level where the child can participate, learn, and begin using a strategy that supports greater independence.
