Why does my child reverse letters and numbers?
Reversals can occur while children learn direction, spatial concepts, symbol memory, and motor plans. Pattern, age, exposure, and functional impact matter.
Why this task is more layered than it looks
A visible outcome is built from several smaller demands. These are useful places to look—not a list of diagnoses:
- Visual discrimination
- Spatial direction
- Motor memory
- Self-monitoring
What to notice first
Choose a calm, familiar version of the task. Change as little as possible and notice:
- Which symbols reverse consistently?
- Can the child identify the model?
- Does copying differ from memory?
Compare building, copying, and writing one symbol to find where the representation changes.
Grade the task from the child’s response
Make it easier: Keep a clear model visible and use one starting cue.
Build from success: Fade the model after formation is consistent.
The goal is not to force completion. It is to find the level where the child can participate, learn, and begin using a strategy that supports greater independence.
